Play Ball!

A hymn for the beginning of the baseball season:

Time, like an ever rolling stream,
Bears all its sons away;
They fly, forgotten, as a dream
Dies at the opening day.

That used to be a stanza that one could well imagine a Cubs’ fan singing poignantly. This year, it may well apply to the Fightin’s faithful.

  1. After this seemingly endless winter, “Play ball!” is all we need to hear.

I don’t even care who wins (though a good year for the Cubs would be nice!).

  2. Last year Jays fans were boasting about an easy 105 wins and maybe a World Series.

It’s a little tamer in the boasting this year…

  3. Go Sawx! Before 04, it was all theology of the cross. Now it’s triumphalism & entitlement to the nth degree in Red Sox Nation. (How’s that for WVism applied to baseball? Better stick to my day job.)

Tony, I’m going with “secular double predestination,” otherwise known as the final fumes of Puritanism in New England. Before ’04, we were always predestined to lose. Since then, we’re elect so must bear fruit accordingly.

My 19 year old daughter wants a Uehara jersey so my parenting hasn’t been a total failure.

  5. It was definitely satisfying to see the Padres take it to the Doyers and their ridiculously bloated payroll in the 8th. A win on opening day does not make or break a season, but given the fact that there have been (very recent) years when the Friars never saw a record over .500, I’ll take it.

  6. Well, looks like the Phillies edged the Rangers 14-10 on opening day. Good enough.
Me, I’m listening (ain’t got cable TV) to the WHITE Sox getting ahead of the Minnesota Twinkies on their own opening day. Good weather after a long, disgusting Winter. NIce to hear pro baseball on the airwaves again.

  7. Jays getting torn to shreds at Tampa.

Chinadoll Reyes hurt in the top of the first, bench has only 3 batters in the first place with the smoking crater of a starting rotation.

  8. Abandon all hope, ye who follow small market teams. Baseball is like Camp Mohawk. All the really good looking players play for the big market teams (except for the Cubs) cause they’ve got all the money.

Nicely done. My 6 year old boy is a contrarian, and has been identifying himself as a Blue Jays fan since he was 5. Where have I gone wrong?

  10. Erik, I’d root for a cubs victory in NLCS over my g-men. Okay fine.

Then again, look at what today is.
