If More Rod Drehers Read Machen

Once again, Rod explains the Benedict Option:

Do you think that is generally true about our society and our civilization — that people, whether they are conscious of it or not, and operating in a sauve qui peut (save who you can) panic? To be perfectly clear about the Ben Op: it is based on the idea that Christianity itself within the West is facing this state of affairs, and that believing Christians, therefore, have to build new structures and reinforce old ones to last through the religious crash that is already happening.

If Rod had read Machen and knew anything about the 1920s contest within U.S. Protestantism over modernism, he would know that some Christians were thinking the West faced a difficult set of affairs — wait for it — a century ago.

Should we really welcome someone who is so late to the party?

  1. If it only takes one generation to forget (or never learn about) things that occurred in the previous generation, why is it a surprise that someone a half-dozen or more generations removed would suddenly spout the concerns that people a hundred years ago had about the church/modernism?

Your expertise on Machen would be extremely helpful to me for reasons that shouldn’t be too hard to figure out. If you have written in detail somewhere about the man’s view of black people, or know of someone you trust to do so accurately who has, I would be most sincerely grateful. Little web snippets are not all that helpful.

I need to know, as far as it is possible to determine, what his motivation was for deny blacks entrance to Westminster in particular and his view of black Americans in general.

If you are unaware of such a resource, I am humbly requesting that you write one. It could not help but be useful far beyond myself anyway.

    OR…

…you can tell me to go play in the freeway. I’m simply asking.

I’m being asked by someone (very) close to me how I can have such a zero tolerance policy toward those who declare God’s blessing upon same sex sex and yet be so tolerant of clear racists like Machen especially. Referring to my especial tolerance of Machen in their view.

I would prefer before answering, to be better armed regarding Machen’s precise views if at all possible.

That’s really what this is about.

  5. Greg, by today’s standards, Machen was a racist, along with George Whitefield, Jonathan Edwards, Charles Hodge, George Washington, and Abraham Lincoln. How you reconcile your admiration for notable historical figures with today’s discussions about race is up to you. Old Life can’t do everything.

Of those men, Machen is the only one that matters. I already dealt with the other theologians and preachers, specifically Whitefield the most. (You forget Dabney btw. 🙂 ) Nobody cares about notable pagans like Washington and Lincoln. There is a difference between affirming homosexuality and being a segregationist. Defending the cruel, man stealing, chattel, beast of burden slavery of the pre war states is far beyond segregation though. Machen did not support that that I know of anyway..

I wasn’t asking you to reconcile anything. I was asking you for information. I woulda done all the reconciling. Here I am trying to give Dr. Hart credit for his domain of expertise and this is what I get? Just for that I’m not giving you your Christmas present. So there.
